WHY DO THE YOGIS SLEEP TO THEIR OWN LEFT SIDE?

You must have observed that almost all yogis sleep to their own left side if you have ever visited the mighty Himalayan Mountain where most of the traditional yogis reside. These Yogis sleep with their head on their left arm used as the natural pillow and facing the left side of their own body.

Almost all animals except the Maanavas (humans) in the animal kingdom sleep on their bellies, be it the dog, cat, buffalo or any other.

You might have never seen the animals sleeping with their own back pressed against the sleeping floor and with their own face and the chest or bosom looking up towards the sky.

Of course, some animals such as the kittens, cats or the dogs can sometimes be seen on their back with all the four legs up, but that is when they are in a playful mood or ridding themselves of the itching present on their back.  

Also, chances are that you might not have seen these creatures sleeping on their arms unlike the Maanavas, either.

The Maanavas don’t follow any hard and fast rule as regards the sleeping posture which they keep on varying, in general.

They take rest or sleep with their own back pressed hard against the sleeping floor and with their own face looking up and the chest or bosom towards the sky.

They sometimes sleep with their head placed on the left arm or the right arm. Sometimes, they use artificial pillow to keep their head on. On other occasions, the same person can be seen sleeping on one’s own back.

But, the Yoga-practitioners, especially the majestic Himalayan Yogis prefer to sleep with their head placed on their own left arm. You are unlikely or less likely to witness them sleep with their own back pressed against the sleeping floor and with their own face looking up and the chest or bosom towards the sky.

The Yogis, notably the Himalayan Yogis sleep with their head on their left arm which is used as the natural pillow and face the left side of their own body because this physical posture is primarily anti-ageing and enables them to live longer.

How does the sleeping on one’s own left arm or facing to one’s own left direction prolong one’s own life?

Let us examine carefully the Maanava anatomy.

The stomach is located to the right. The large intestine, the colon and the rectum are placed to the left in the lower part of the body. The small intestine though situated on both sides is mainly towards the left.

We witness the following three scenarios:

(1) The First Scenario

When the person sleeps with the face up and the legs straight then the abdominal skin gets stretched causing pressure on the whole abdominal area.

The person feels discomfort since the abdominal pressure makes the breathing process uneasy.

The abdominal pressure slows down the movement of the whole digestive system machinery.



The process of the digestion slows down. Less energy is formed from the food inside the tummy. This means the generation of lesser amount of the energy and the essential nutrients needed to meet the wear and tear of the tissues and the cells.

The less amount of the energy and the essential nutrients further means reduced building up of the newer cells and the tissues.

Also, the waste material and the gases from the stomach move slowly from the right to the left side into the small intestines, large intestine, the colon and the rectum due to the congestion caused by the abdominal pressure. The movement consumes greater amount of the energy.

(2) The Second Scenario

When the person sleeps to the right side then, although
the abdominal skin doesn’t get stretched, the whole abdominal area, the large intestine, the colon, the rectum and most of the small intestine gets placed upward with respect to the right waist.

The movement of

the waste material is now from the bottom (right side) to the top (left side) in the context of the physical posture.

This scenario results into all the problems associated with the first scenario. Plus, it creates a few more additional problems, too.






(3) The Third Scenario

When the person sleeps to the left side then the large intestine, the colon, the rectum and most of the small intestine gets placed downward in the position of the rest in the context of the right side which is now placed upwardly.

The third scenario is the best for the ideal functioning of the digestive system in order to create the largest amount of the energy and the essential nutrients required to meet the demand for
the building up of the new cells and tissues besides meeting the requirements for the wear and tear of the cells and tissues.

The heart functions perhaps the best in the Third Scenario.

Moreover, the third scenario doesn’t result into the problems associated with the First and the Second Scenario.

Normally, the natural span of the life of any living organism is dependent on the wear and tear of the cells and tissues besides the availability of the optimal energy and the essential nutrients to let the physical body continue function healthy. The Maanava body is no exception to it.

The continuous healthy functioning of the Maanava body means the slowing down of the degeneration and decay of its own cells and tissues in addition to the production of the newer healthy cells and tissues. Conversely, the slowing down of the degeneration and decay of the cells and tissues plus the creation of the newer cells and tissues means the longer life than the normal one.
