How much shall the Shiv Sena gain politically if the Shiv Sena-BJP alliance breaks up in view of adamant stands taken by both the Shiv Sena and the BJP as regards seat sharing for the forthcoming Maharashtra assembly elections with the Shiv Sena chief Udhav Thakre
sticking to his formula – 151 seats for the Shiv Sena and 120 seats for the BJP, concession of one more seat from earlier 119 seats with claims that he has generously sacrificed claim on 18 seats by allotting these to other minor associates of the 25 year old grand Shiv Sena-BJP Yuti [alliance] and the BJP not back tracking on its demand for 130 seats which its Maharashtra co-ordinator Pratap Rudy claims to be liberal demand…?
The BJP has gone on record on Indian TV channels claiming that the 59 seats that the Shiv Sena wants have never been won by the Shiv Sena in the past assembly elections. So, the BJP wants to try its political luck on these 59 seats by trying to capitalise on the so-called Modi Magic that the BJP believes, whether rightly or wrongly, helped the BJP get the 282 seats in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections…! Devendra Phadnavis, the Maharashtra BJP chief has said that the BJP stands a chance of winning these 59 seats by resorting to the so-called Modi Magic…!

Eknath Phadse, the BJP strongman from Maharashtra has told ‘India TV’ channel anchor Rajat Sharma that he [Eknath Phadse] he didn’t appreciate the fact that Udhav Thakre had sent his own 23 year old son Aditya Thakre, a very junior political persona for negotiations with the BJP. He however glossed over the fact that the BJP had earlier meted out the same disrespect to Udhav Thakre when Amit Shah, the BJP national president didn’t meet Udhav Thakre while in Mumbai and Udhav Thakre had to seek an appointment with Amit Shah…J

Show of any disrespect to any Shiv Sena chief was unthinkable in the days of Balasaheb Thakre the founder of the Shiv Sena…! Perhaps, the intoxication of the brute majority in the Lok Sabha made Amit Shah make miscalculated mistake of showing disrespect to Udhav Thakre…J

Udhav Thakre and team seem to have done their political homework well. Perhaps, he has shrewdly calculated that his Shiv Sena is now more likely to win on all those 59 seats that it used to lose earlier. Reasons? Plenty! He knows well the art of invoking the Maratha Pride to get votes! The mood of the average Indian voter has turned against the Congress and its allies. Plus, recent by-poll results in state assembly elections have shown that the so-called Modi Magic is on the wane for numerous reasons. For example, the BJP lost 8 out of 11 assembly seats held by it in Uttar Pradesh despite it having earlier won more than 60 Lok Sabha seats in the same state…! Despite the so-called Modi Magic, the BJP had earlier been unable to stop AAP, a young new political outfit from coming to power in Delhi…!

Thus, it would appear the BJP under the stewardship of Amit Shah is making the Himalayan blunder by remaining intransigent in its stand on the issue of seat sharing in the ensuing Maharashtra assembly elections. Instead, it should have accepted graciously 120 seats to save the grand old alliance and worked hard to win all of these 120 seats to prove its claim that the BJP now matters more to voters than any other political party in Maharashtra…! Winning all 120 seats could have opened up the possibility of amicable installation of the BJP chief minister in Maharashtra in addition to mellowing the resistance by the Shiv Sena.

The Shiv Sena is unlikely to team up with the NCP or Congress due to its ideological differences and its own desire to be not seen associated with a party like NCP or Congress that is seen as corrupt by general voters.

In the event of the break-up of the alliance, it’s the BJP that looks like losing more politically than the Shiv Sena. Besides, the NCP of Sharad Pawar may also gain with the opposition votes-split between the Shiv Sena and the BJP…! So, it’s the BJP that has to display outstanding political wisdom and maturity, swallow down its own unjustified pride, tone down and go ahead with the formula proposed by Udhav Thakre if it wishes to make any real political gains in Maharashtra…!
