THE RESTLESS HUMAN MIND – HOW TO CALM IT?

The Question

How to overcome Sankalpas-Vekalpas?

The Answer

The human mind has tendency to always be restless with one or the other thought emerging each moment. You always are thinking about one or the other thing. No one in the world can claim to have a mind which is perfectly still and calm. The day your mind becomes fully calm, it shall have become easier for you to experience the deep state of meditation called Samaadhe, Svekalpa or the Neravekalpa.
The brain undergoes the processes called Sankalpa and Vekalpa. Sankalpa means the habit of our mind to always deciding to keep doing one or the other thing. Vekalpa means the tendency of our mind to come up with various alternatives. It means: when not this then that is other alternative.
It is impossible to always remain without thoughts. Even in the most remote of the places like mountain caves, your mind shall still be busy thinking.
Then, how to overcome this restless tendency of our human mind? As numerous eminent spiritual-seekers have experienced, we must try to channelize our thoughts positively. That is, we must try to spiritualize our thoughts.
For example, the one who has channelized one’s thoughts spiritually shall see the foto of a beautiful lady as the graceful face of the Divine Mother and make progress in meditation. The one who has been unable to do so may remain lusty and see the foto as the foto of Urvashee or Rambhaa, the famed Indian mythological nymphs who served as objects for satisfying sexual desires…!
We must cultivate the habit of thinking about the Supreme Consciousness or the Almighty. We must substitute our habit of thinking about negative desires with the more meaningful positive desires of spiritual salvation. We must substitute our habit of being unreasonably selfish, greedy, angry, lusty and attached with the more positive habits of caring, sharing, love, compassion and affection for fellow human beings.
Slowly, steadily, but surely, this way, your mind will start becoming purer day by day leading to a stage when it shall start becoming calmer. The day your mind gets past the habit of Sankalpa-Vekalpa, the Samaadhe shall be within your easy reach.
